This performance takes place on Giffin Square, in front of Deptford Lounge.
Chalk Circle invites the public to be part of a collective drawing on the streets of Deptford. Several strands of string will be attached to sticks of chalk, and fixed to a central point on the pavement allowing participants to scribble freely within its restrictions. Our chaotic patterns will reflect the diversity and chaos within our urban environment, which will come together to form a completed and uniform circle of chalk
Through the physical, repetitive action of scribbling, the mind is left to wander. Our inner thoughts, anxieties, conflicts and differences are absorbed into the completion of the circle. We celebrate its simplicity and the natural order that emerges before us in the knowledge that our diversity has created it.
Here, the audience becomes the artist. The artwork will be continually mutating, changing form and progressing at the hands of the public as it is bumped into amongst the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
Chalk Circle is an activity designed to fill in the time: a reflection on the anxiety to continually produce and be productive with time. There is momentary comfort in the idea of moving towards completion. It is the visualisation of a perfect circle that validates this scribble. I think too many people are scared of creating a scribble.
